ASIA TRIP 2024 – HONG KONG PT.2 – JULY 9

While the weather was hot it was really nice to see the beautiful blue skies and the bright sun.

Having the view of this construction site from my bedroom window was something I enjoyed. I guess it appealed to my inner child.

While on the Yat Tung Estate I stood out since I was the white foreigner amongst the local residential area. So in an attempt to try and make some more candid photographs I thought I'd try “shooting from the hip”. I’d never tried this before and I think the results reflect that.

My idea was to try and capture life as it is with out eliciting reactions from people. I kept my camera in plain sight carrying it in one hand about mid-torso level. It was usually pointing to my right side as I was walking forward. I had mixed feelings about shooting this way. One the one hand I felt that candid shot was a more truthful representation of whomever I was photographing. For documentation purposes I felt this was important. But on the other hand, I felt like I was sneaking around by making photographs of people that were unaware. I still have these feelings months later after looking at the images.

Citygate Bus Station

I didn’t oversaturate the photograph like many news media outlets do, but walking past this giant poster of this orange faced woman made me wonder if she had the same makeup artist as Trump. It’s probably not be visible when viewed on the computer, but when viewed in person you could clearly see where the makeup ends near her ear, on her neck, and at the edge of her hairline.

So many people’s eyes seem glued to their mobile devices. Sign of the times I suppose.

Usually there are lots of people walking between the Citygate bus station on the right and the MTR station on the left. This particular day and time was different.
