ASIA TRIP 2024 – HONG KONG PT.2 – July 4 - 5
Clouds rolling over Sunset Peak on Lantau Island as seen from Citygate.
The next few days we spent time visiting family and for me, resting some. My leg was still swollen and walking only made it worse. I followed up with a local doctor that was super conveniently located in the mall that’s on the Yat Tung Estate. The trade off of smaller living quarters for the sake of convenience of nearly everything else is quite appealing.
I tried to bring my camera with me everywhere I went. I’m sure local people must have had a few laughs seeing me with my camera at the grocery store, although nowadays with everyone taking photos of everything and posting it on social media, I guess it’s not really uncommon.
The more times I visit Hong Kong the more familiar everything becomes. I’ve found this to be a bad thing for photographic creativity. Things that once jumped out at me are now mundane. This was actually pretty upsetting for me. I guess the flip-side is that I have to work harder to make a photograph and as a result I don’t come back with tons of photos that seemed interesting at the time only to find out they were actually crap.
During a previous visit to Hong Kong I’d met some women with tortoises but couldn’t remember if she was one of them. As it turns out, they were her friends.
My memory is likely to have failed me on this, but I believe the owner said that she likes to take the bird outside because her home was too hot in the summer as she didn’t have air conditioning. And because the bird liked to liked to sing to the wild birds outside.
She also mentioned that her bird would get stressed being at home so she would take it out as often as she could.
Another work in progress from the man that lives in the same building as my mother-in-law.
The view from the common area in my brother-in-law’s building.
Morning, afternoon and evening I would see what I assume to be mostly retired residents hanging out with each other, chatting, smoking and sometimes drinking. It didn’t matter if it was hot and humid, they’d be out enjoying their time together. Sometimes I wanted to join them.
